“Congratulations! You made it through your first week at Allen,” Greta said, coming into Sarah’s classroom. “Rick and I are going to grab a beer at McMenamin’s. Want to come with?”

Sarah finished the note she was texting herself about Abigail’s mom having a baby next week and Abigail’s possible absence. “Uh, yeah, okay. I could go for a beer.”

“Excellent,” Greta said. “We have until about five before we start seeing students and parents there, so we’ll need to leave soon.”

Sarah looked around at her desk. Allen Elementary was trying a year of no homework to see if it made a difference in the kids’ excitement about learning, so she had nothing to grade. Not even worksheets to put a check mark on. “I’m ready when you are. The one on Murray?” she asked.

“Yup. That’s the one. The service is shit, but they just put poutine on the menu, so it all equals out.”

“Mmm, fries with gravy? Glad we’re making healthy choices,” Sarah said.

“Don’t forget the cheese curds on top,” Greta added. “Protein to help build strong muscles under our layers of fat.”

Rick stood in the doorway of Sarah’s room. He slung his backpack over his shoulder. “You coming too, Sarah?” he asked.

Sarah nodded.

“Let me just grab my tote bag,” Greta said.

The three of them walked out to the north parking lot together, Rick holding the door open for Sarah and Greta.

They got in their cars, Greta leading the way.

Sarah looked in her rearview mirror as she backed out and saw nothing but parking lot and the school behind her.

It had been two months since she’d seen Other Sarah. Sarah was going through that thing again, the desire she had after a big life change, to just live her life without knowing what was going on in the alternate one.

She was determined to do things differently here than she’d done in L.A. Yes, she had reminded Neil of their shared past, but they’d managed to avoid each other the rest of the week. She was sure he considered it simply a coincidence.

Going out with her co-workers was a good first step. Sarah would make friends. Sarah would worry more about her life and what it actually was than reaching for comparison with Other Sarah’s.

For now at least. Until she couldn’t stand it. Until she needed the oracle of her other life to tell her what to do in this timeline. Now, though, she was going to go drink with her co-workers and talk shop and eat poutine.

They walked into the pub and Greta went directly for a booth in the back near the shuffleboard.

“I’ll go up to the bar and order the first round, that’s usually faster,” Rick said.

Sarah sifted through the pile of menus and leaflets on the table until she found the beer list. “I’ll take a Terminator,” she said.

“Ruby for me, thanks,” Greta said. “And an order of poutine. We can all share. It’s massive.”

Rick left to go to the bar and Greta sat back in her seat.
